Going Green

A special environmental report by NBC4.

On Tuesday, March 13, NBC4 in Washington, D.C., featured a story entitled the "Green Awakening Taking Place in the Paper Industry." This 3 1/2-minute report is a "must see" for people in the catalog and magazine industry. In it Wendy Rieger recounts the difficulties that some catalogue publishers like Victoria's Secret faced because of their poor environmental practices.

Environmental groups went after Victoria's Secret, chastising the lingerie company for using pulp from endangered forests. After an intense ForestEthics environmental awareness campaign, the company agreed to use eco-friendly papers.

Magazine industry launches recycling campaign

The Magazine Publishers of America is launching an industry-wide public education campaign designed to let readers know that magazines can and should be recycled.

The campaign consists of two logos that will begin appearing in magazines later this year. One logo says: “Please Recycle This Magazine.” The other logo adds a second message: “Please Remove Samples or Inserts Before Recycling.” This logo will be used in issues of magazines that include CDs, samples, or other non-paper inserts that can make it harder to recycle the magazine. The MPA will recommend that the logo be located in each issue of MPA-member publications in a consistent and easy-to-find position, such as the masthead or at the bottom of the table of contents.

Speaking at a conference in Orlando, Florida, Nina Link, president and CEO of MPA, also urged the magazine industry to use more certified paper in its magazines. “Certified paper is harvested in a responsible and sustainable way,” she noted. “That will keep the forests healthy and strong for generations to come. There are several credible certification programs available to paper manufacturers, and we need to let our suppliers know that this is a priority for our industry.” [Click here for more information and downloadable logos]

Frank Parsons America supports the efforts of the MPA and encourages you to use an FSC or SFI certified paper for your next publication. For more information on environmentally responsible papers please contact your local Frank Parsons America National Accounts Manager.
